Work or Fight in West Haven Sparks Draft Action
In New Haven, August 16, the West Haven draft board began enforcing the work or fight ruling. Fifteen draft age residents were summoned to the town hall to receive guidance on changing employment or serving in the trenches. Prominent families attended as men were told they must work in some essential capacity. Several exempted men, including a grocery store worker and a clothing firm salesman, were advised. both insist they are doing their part though they have not worked in factories. If a new Congress drafts ages 18 to 45, many now considered non essential may be required to switch to war related work. Police did not call the meeting.

American Lieutenants Score in Aisne Vesle Front
Three American lieutenants of the flying corps brought down German planes on the Aisne Vesle front this afternoon. Harold Buckley of Springfield Massachusetts Edward P Curtis of Rochester and Charles Glayatt of Port Royal Virginia each claimed a kill in the Wesle region.
