Allied troops press forward against German positions in a major advance marked by rapid gains. Coordinated offensives by Anglo French forces drive German defenses back across multiple sectors as morale and material strain become evident for the Axis powers. A reported 24,000 casualties or prisoners accompany the breakthrough efforts.
Allied troops have entered Montdidier, with fighting continuing as German forces retreat along a 30 mile front. French and British units report rapid progress, capturing dozens of villages and hundreds of German guns while Americans are engaged in the push between the Somme and Ancre rivers.
Allied reports claim Montdidier, a key German support position on the Picardy front, has been captured. The town's strategic value lies in eight highways and four rail lines converging there, linking Amiens Chaulnes Roye and other routes along the Ayre river. The town was seized during Germany’s first major offensive of the year begun March 21.
London reports a day of heavy air combat with 115 German and British aircraft downed, 48 German planes destroyed, 17 driven out of control, and five German observation balloons shot down. British airmen aided infantry, tanks, and artillery with reconnaissance, ammunition drops, and bombs, while bombing squadrons targeted trains and bridges along the Somme.
London reports a reassurance proclamation published by the British at Vladivostok Archangel and Murmansk states the allies will not impose a form of government or keep Russian territory. The sole aim is to help save Russia from dismemberment by the Germans, officials say.
London reports that over 24 000 German prisoners have been taken since August 8, pushing total captures since July 18 to more than 57 000.
