Allied forces led by Field Marshal Haig and the First French Army strike a wide front in Picardy. American troops are integrated with British units as the allies press a grand assault to push back German lines from Amiens. Terrific gunfire signals a major new movement with the battle line ten miles from Amiens.
The allied offensive opened opposite Amiens today marks the seventh drive of the year. Earlier drives were by Germany on March 21 in Picardy, April 9 in Flanders, May 27 on the Aisne-Marne front, June 9 at Noyon Montdidier, July 15 in Marie Champagne. the Allies launched July 18 on the Aisne-Marne front and August 8 in Picardy.
British Fourth Army and French First Army opened a wide front assault at dawn on August 8 toward Amiens in Picardy. Initial dispatches say the attack is progressing satisfactorily with Germans surprised after earlier Marne actions. Americans were reported to be near the battle line southeast of Amiens as Allied forces press to push German forces back from the city.
U S troops brigaded with the British join a great British offensive before Amiens. Identity of units not disclosed. Officers say the aim is to push back German forces at Amiens and shorten the war. The U S plan for a five million man army boosts Allied capability and promises sustained offensives across the Western Front.
Paris reports at 5 o clock this morning French troops with British forces attacked southeast of Amiens on the Picardy front. The operation is developing under favorable conditions following a strong Aisne Marne advance and a fresh Allied blow. The war office communique says the attack began at 5 o'clock and was conducted in conjunction with British troops.
By N C Parke American forces forced crossings of the Vesle river between Fismes and Bazoches. They dug in on new positions, cleared German machine gun nests with heavy artillery fire, and under fierce enemy fire, completed a dawn crossing to the north bank. Engineers built light bridges as troops repulsed counterattacks and prepared for further action east of Fismes.
London reports a historic milestone as a railway ferry service begins across the channel from England to France. Trains transfer to boats despite tidal challenges, a problem tackled by an 1872 idea that overcame previous inefficiencies.
New York August 8 the sub treasury reports a loss of 136000 to banks on Tuesday reducing the cash net gain since Friday to 5078000.
Forecast calls for thunder showers and cooler conditions tonight with Friday partly cloudy skies. Connecticut should expect thunder showers this afternoon or tonight, cooler by Friday, with light west winds. Observations show New Haven at 82 degrees and partly cloudy as scattered showers move through the north.
