German resistance delays Allied momentum along the Aisne as heavy guns are moved to the northern bank. General Foch orders halt to organize fresh positions and stiffen defense.
French and American forces hold a deadlock on the Aisne and Vesle fronts as General Foch pauses offensives to reorganize heavy artillery. German counterattacks north of the Vesle are repelled while French advances secure the Avre river near Brasches and Morsel. Allied planning contemplates a broader push before summer.
New Haven August 6 Colonel W A Mercer commands that the war department orders the formation of a Slavic Legion from Czecho Slovak troops to be trained at Camp Wadsworth Spartanburg South Carolina. Recruiting stations in New Haven Hartford Bridgeport Waterbury and New London will accept applicants who meet army requirements and are not subject to the draft. English not required. Soldiers may compete for commissioned officer positions with suitable education and language ability. Also listed were John S Rich East Hampton cavalry and Richard W Griswold Wethersfield Tank corps who were sent to Fort Slocum New York for enlistment.
Paris August 6 a American detachment earned glory by holding ground against a German advance in defiance of orders. A veteran recounts that when urged to retreat the detachment refused, the French flank relayed the command to pull back, but the unit persisted, stopping the German push and marking the halt of their advance.
London reports a German attempt to capture a British post northeast of Merris was repulsed by a counter attack. German gas shells were fired north of Villers-Brettonneux. In Nieppe forest, a few prisoners and machine guns were captured. Americans press slowly on the Marne Vesle front with recon air observations and ongoing fighting north of the Vesle.
Paris reports the imminent resignation of Admiral von Capelle, former under secretary of marine and ally of Tirpitz, alongside the prior departure of Admiral von Holtzendorff, as a consequence of Germanys failed ruthless submarine campaign. Washington reports three army and two marine corps casualty lists issued today. The army lists show 358 names with seven killed in action, three died of wounds, 111 wounded in action, and severities including 18 severely wounded and one slightly wounded. Notable entries include Lieut. Quentin Roosevelt listed as killed in action and buried. The lists include officers and privates from New England and other states, with multiple captains, lieutenants, sergeants, corporals, and privates named. Additional army lists from General Pershing will be released to morning papers.
