British and German forces clash with few gains as intense fighting rages through Sunday. German attacks fail with heavy losses near the Picardy front, while Picardy battle imagery recalls Verdun as Scots Greys perform a costly rear-guard action along the Ham Ollery canal and escape across a bridge.
London reports the Couey wood sector in Picardy as the closest German approach to Paris during Sundays fighting. The wood lies about 60 to 61 miles north north east of Paris near the Aijlette river, just north of which lies the main trench lines. The zone lies 19 miles from Laon, a German base, allowing rapid troop concentrations. The significance of attacking closest to Paris remains unclear.
British forces extend lines south of the Somme and along the Amiens area amid heavy German artillery and gas bombardment. Von Hindenburg’s troops face a persistent Allied defense with Haig reporting sharp fighting and limited gains, while German attacks fail to recapture lost ground. The Picardy front forms twin salients south of Albert and Castel sector, positioning three miles from Ailly and signaling potential renewed German pressure as observers compare the clash to Verdun.
With the American Army in France, April 7, American discipline and courage repulsed two German raids northwest of Toul. Gas masks, rifle and machine gun fire drove off the first assault, while a second raid was thwarted by a counter barrage and infantry charge. Germans exploited heavy bombardment and gas, yet were routed with American artillery silencing two batteries.

Madrid is said to face pressure as U S and Entente officials monitor neutral Spain and its pledged neutrality and cooperation with U boat bases along its coast.
Rome reports Italy ready to counter any Austro German thrust. Piave positions Assago plateau and surrounding mountains have been strengthened. Reorganized and reinforced forces exhibit high morale. Teutonic renewal expected but date unclear. Civilian and troops monitor Picardy battle with optimism for allied success.
More than twenty Tulsa women have signified intent to work in garages and have registered with the Women's Council of Defense. They will join classes conducted by the council. Only women accustomed to hard work should apply, says Mrs. J. N. Cooke, class in-charge.
