Italians Open Floodgates on Piave to Halt Enemy

Italian engineers released floodwaters on the Piave and Sile rivers creating a widening water barrier twelve miles across to thwart the enemy. The inundation traps were aimed at blocking advances toward Venice as German and Austrian forces faced rising waters and retreating lines on the front near Grisolea and Dona Di Piave. Berlin also announced the capture of Cismon on the northern Italian front.

Italian Line Holds Against Austro German Attacks

By Associated Press Rome Nov 16 official dispatches report that the entire mountain front from Asiago to the Piave river repelled Austro German assaults. All positions attacked yesterday remain in Italian hands as forces strive to crush the line.

Washington reports the British steamer Kansas City was lost at sea after parting from its convoy on September 5. The vessel was unlocated since, and aboard was J H A Muir of Poland Park Maryland, listed as a first class signalman.

Murdered for buying Liberty Bond in Virginia

Associated Press reports in Virginia that Mr. and Mrs. Paul Alara and boarder Peter Trepich were killed in their home. A note warned other Austrian families in the state who bought Liberty Bonds or contributed to the Red Cross that they would meet a similar fate.

Eddy County Red Cross members report 217 inspected gauze dressings completed this week. Two boxes of kits mainly knitted items await shipment, including sweaters scarves wristlets and socks along with pajamas and convalescent robes. L. E. Foster, manager of the Carlsbad Project, returns to work today after a brief vacation that included a hunting trip in the Guadalupe mountains. B. C. Wilton of Pecos stays at the Palace hotel to attend to local business affairs. Chas Ward suffered a severe injury while two cow cars were being shipped to Kansas City. found unconscious between the cars, he was saved by a breakman and is recovering at home after a troubled night.
