In Copenhagen on July 1 the German Chancellor Von Hertling told the Reichstag committee that Germany has no intention to keep Belgium after the war. He described Belgium as a pawn for future negotiations and affirmed Belgium would become an independent state living in friendly relations with Germany once the war ends.
British forces report successful minor operations last night on the Flanders front near Vieux Berguin and Morris. An official statement says ninety six prisoners and a machine gun nest were captured.
American forces overseas and on ships surpassed the one million mark, an increase of over ninety thousand since last week, General March told the Senate military committee. Three corps totaling about 222 to 250 thousand were formed from American divisions in France, with Major General Hunter Liggett leading the Forty‑First Sunset Division as temporary commander of the First Army Corps. The Second and Third Corps were unnamed, while the famed New York Rainbow division joined the First Army Corps under Major General Charles T. Menahan.
