French Advance One Mile Deep Pushes German Line Near Paris

French troops struck the Geri line north of Paris driving a wedge west of Anthevil along the Compiegne road. The action spanned a two and a half mile front with Petain’s forces penetrating enemy positions up to a mile at times and capturing two farms and four hundred fifty prisoners.

Italian Troops Push Advantage in Albania Front

Allied offensive in Albania continues with progress along the Adriatic coast. Italian forces captured Fier and other key points, taking about thirteen hundred prisoners. Italian cavalry flanked Malacastre and moved toward the Avatoian pass, destroying bridges over the Semini river to the north.

French Troops Advance West of Antheuil Front

French forces attacked German lines two and a half miles west of Antheuil between Mont Didier and the Oise river. They penetrated enemy positions and advanced up to a mile at some points. A German counterattack on Ones Farm was repulsed. French captured four hundred and more prisoners. Marine casualties listed at fifty two and army casualties at fifty seven.

Train Wreck Near Nashville Kills Many

Two passenger trains on the Nashville Chattanooga and St. Louis line collided near Belle Meade Park. Early reports put casualties at twenty five killed and fifty injured with later tallies rising as rescue efforts continued. The wreck involved trains from Memphis to St. Louis and Nashville to Memphis, with multiple cars demolished and two burning. Most of the dead were reported to be African American.

Island of Guam Reported Destroyed by Fire

Captain Roy Smith, governor and naval commandant, told the Navy Department that Guam is largely destroyed by fire on July 6. He reported half the population is destitute and crops are destroyed.

Fire Destroyed Dwelling and Secondhand Store on South Canyon Street

A morning blaze gutted a wooden dwelling and secondhand store on South Canyon Street. J F Allison and wife lived in the rear. a coal oil stove explosion ignited the fire as he left to nail slate. Despite rapid response and good water pressure, the interior burned, with only a few valuables saved.

Fire Leaves Residents Homeless and Gardens Ruined

The fire damaged a building owned by Mrs Tansill with insurance thought. Mr and Mrs Allison, unable to work, receive sympathy as they stay at the Metropolitan Hotel while deciding next steps. Fire department efforts are praised as the article continues on the next page.
