American troops in a night operation on the Marne front captured the village of Vaux and the heights west and northwest of it in conjunction with French forces. About 200 German prisoners were taken, along with five officers and significant booty. the action followed a bold forward dash with strong American infantry support.
Judge Elect Brice praises Eddy County for its record in wartime manpower. He notes Carlsbad and Artesia units led state in volunteer percentage with high Class One enlistments, and Eddy County posted the nation's strongest draft contribution. Brice says locals sacrifice to support the war effort and Carlsbad and Eddy County remain leaders.
Rome reports Austrians yesterday made fresh attacks on Italian positions along the Alpine plateau. Italian fire repulsed the assaults with heavy enemy losses. Columbus, Ohio reports Rev. Washington Gladden died today in the city.
An official statement reports a catastrophic explosion at the National Shell firing factory in Midland London Monday night. Between sixty and seventy workers are reported dead with many injured.
Washington July 2 Inter state Commerce Commission reports a reduction of 108 196 896 dollars in operating income for 123 of the largest railroads during the first five months under government control compared with the same period last year. Despite lower income, total revenues for the five months were higher than last year.
German forces attacked northwest of Albert on the Somme in an attempt to regain ground. They gained a footing in one British trench but elsewhere were repelled.
In Washington on July 2, Secretary Baker, Secretary Daniels, and Postmaster General Burleson urged the Aswell resolution to empower the President to seize telegraph, telephone, cable, and radio systems. The House moved jurisdiction from the commerce committee to a new necessary committee amid the hearing. Marines report a change in status for the amalgamation project as of that date.
Report says French guns on hill 204 between Vaux and Chateau Thierry ready to press the operation. If continued the movement promises further important results by a punching out process against the German salient.
Aetna Chemical Company plant east of town suffers a major fire that wiped out four buildings. The blaze began in the gun cotton department and about 50 000 pounds of cotton were consumed. Estimated loss runs to a million dollars. John Swift arrived from Drench today.
A second Marine casualty list from Washington reports Frank McDermott of Portales New Mexico killed in action. John Wivens of Grand Canyon Arizona wounded severely. Twenty eight missing in action including Clint Fulmer of Concrete Colorado and Raymond C. Johnson of Denver.
Miss Mason of Clovis arrives in the city this afternoon and plans a visit with Miss Frances Moore. J L Williams a Malaga merchant is a business visitor in Carlabad today.
