A major blast and fire in Halifax following a collision of an American munitions ship destroyed parts of the city, killed scores, and left telegraph and telephone services disrupted for miles. Reports say the explosion's roar was heard sixty miles away, and a large blaze swept Buckingham suburb.
Reported by Associated Press a massive explosion in Halifax causes extensive destruction. Thousands killed or injured as citywide fires rage and key depots collapse, with multiple facilities rendered unusable.
A munition ship explosion near Halifax triggers a massive blast that shatters the North Street depot roof and injures warehouses along the water front. Freight cars are blown from tracks, and fires rage across the north end of the city with millions in property damage expected. Special trains bring firefighting and medical aid as fleets rush to the scene.
The House will take up the war resolution tomorrow at the start of the session. A formal report from the foreign affairs committee showed no dissent, and the measure is expected to pass before adjournment.
Twenty five air raids targeted England with bombs reaching London. Fires caused by the blasts were quickly controlled and damage is believed light.
British forces slightly advanced southwest of La Vacquerie on the Sambral front while conducting a surprise withdrawal southwest of Noyelles Suleveant and Hourton Wood. The move reportedly went unnoticed by German forces until the next day. the Halifax suburb Buckingham was wrecked by a separate explosion, leaving hundreds dead or injured in Halifax streets and hospitals overwhelmed.
Gaston Means testified in his own defense about German plots to restore Huerta to the Mexican dictatorship and a possible war between Mexico and the United States. The Library Association annual meeting is set for Tuesday December 11 at 2 p.m. at the Indies club rooms, per secretary Tilden A. Joyce.
