Fire damages Norwegian steamer at South Brooklyn dock

Associated Press reports the Norwegian steamer Christianfors suffered about a million dollars in damage from a fire while docked in South Brooklyn. Also damaged were a Buenos Aires hide steamer and a British sugar vessel Baron Jedbreh. The French occupied Talou Ridge on the Verdun front without fighting.

Cow Injured as Auto Strikes Lactating Herd in Lane

A milk cow owned by H. D. Hubbard was struck by an automobile this morning in the lane near his home. The animal’s hip was broken as the herd moved toward pasture and milking. Details of the incident are not yet learned.

Superintendent George M Brinton regrets to announce Miss Hertha G Smith has resigned from Carlsbad High School after four years of teaching. She instructed typewriting shorthand Spanish and Domestic Science and contributed as a musician aiding student productions. Her loss will be felt by the students and staff.

Exemption Board Members Plead Guilty in Draft Conspiracy

In Nerk August 20 Dr. J Bernfeld and Louis J Cherrey along with ninety nine others from the New York City exemption bound pleaded guilty to conspiracy to obstruct the draft law and were sentenced to two years in the penitentiary at Atlanta Georgia. The item also notes a local laundry ad and social chatter about a picnic in the plains.

Family settles in Toyah and Seven Rivers ranch

Foreman Ed Harper of Midland Bridge Co completes a steel reinforced concrete bridge across Dark Canyon. Road Supervisor Davidson of Roswell accepts the structure this morning. County work by F. E. Little will finish nearby curves. The six foot high, seventy foot span allows flood passage and sits on piles driven to bedrock.
