The aurora borealis interrupted wire communication across the northern United States and Canada from the Rockies to the Atlantic. Telegraph and telephone lines were affected for several hours from midnight into morning, rendering many trunk circuits useless.
Associated Press report from Washington states exertion boards must deny immunity to married registrants when spouses volunteer to support them. Governors are told that the first one third of the 187,000 drafted for war service must be called to training camps before September 11, with preparations to ensure timely readiness.
Paris reports artillery activity near Chevrigny and Pantson with French detachments clearing German trenches north of Vaux les Palameix on the Aisne front and returning safely to their lines.

The Associated Press reports Bishop Nicholas Matz of the Denver Catholic Diocese died this morning at age sixty seven. He was consecrated titular bishop of Telmessa in 1887 and became the second bishop of Denver on July 10, 1889 after the death of Right Rev Joseph J Muchebeuf.
