Wilson Newell Hu Wilson of Glenn Road Newport was severely injured when gored by a bull on his farm. He was thrown into the air twice. Dr H B Peabody attended and stitched wounds under the left arm and on the right side. The incident occurred while he was milking a cow and attempting to escape.
Washington May 21 The Interstate Commerce Commission approved a loan of at least 125 million dollars from the 800 million revolving fund to help railroads buy equipment needed to meet the public transportation needs.
Madrid May 21 martial law declared after bread scarcity sparked disturbances. Police clashed with crowds during food riots yesterday as shortages intensified.
Albert Lovely aged 60 died at St. Albans Hospital after being shot in the neck in his sleep on April 20. He awoke about 12:45 AM and reported four bullet wounds. Mrs. Kate Ives, the casekeeper, admitted shooting him, claiming he planned to leave town without her. she faces assault charges.
Washington dispatch reports the Senate Privileges and Elections committee ordered a subcommittee to begin open hearings on pre convention campaign expenditures and pledges of Republican and Democratic presidential candidates. Campaign managers will be telegraphed to attend Monday sessions.
Persia appealed to the League of Nations for protection against Bolshevik aggression after Bolshevik forces landed on Persian soil near the Caspian Sea. The appeal was made through the Persian foreign minister.
Corporal Wallace M. Carter of St. Johnsbury earned the marksman medal after rifle range trials showing standing kneeling and sitting scores. He enlisted May 3 in Boston and is stationed aboard the U. S. S. Florida with his mother Mrs. Cora Lucas in St. Johnsbury. Marines excelled at the National Rifle Matches at Cold Spring New Jersey last summer and riflemen are being chosen for the Antwerp Olympic games and Camp Beio rifle matches next August.
Vermont Aero Club members seek a $2 500 land option on the Butler meadow near St Johnsbury Center to establish a landing field. Subscribers surpass the goal with 80 residents pledging 50 or 25 dollars each. Capt H J Stickney of Bellows Falls proposes exhibition flights in a Curtis biplane if a suitable landing is secured.
A boy wandering J. C. Oakley’s Newport property found two suitcases filled with whiskey. He assumed they belonged to Oakley and left, then returned after learning they did not. An automobile driver exited the field, retrieved the suitcases, and drove away. The liquor appeared hidden there overnight.
Willoughby Lake site at The Boulders sees a 32 by 75 foot dancing pavilion and auditorium rising under Lyndon Woman's Club management. Elmer A. Darling of East Burke funds the work as James M. Foye directs the venture to boost summer trade and resort appeal.
May 21 Viets found guilty of manslaughter in the Westboro hospital death of John M. Weeks of Cambridge. Richard R. Prices dropped across the market with corn and pork posting steep breaks. July corn fell to 68 cents a bushel and July pork to 84.75 dollars per barrel as grains and provisions tumbled. Governor Coolidge urged Massachusetts residents to boost home gardening efforts and proposed a 7500 dollar measure to hire students for farm work.
