Vermont and New Hampshire fans anticipate a real baseball league this year reviving prewar rivalries between Northeastern Vermont and Northeastern New Hampshire. Towns report strong support as Boost the league spreads among communities.
Newport business leaders attend regu lay meeting at Pustin Hall with Boston University professor David D. Vaughn delivering an address on freedom justice equality and their real meanings. President Wilcox presided as 81 new members were reported and officers were sworn in. A $200 appropriation was approved.
John R. Murray, a professional boxer, died after a knockout loss to Davey Powers in Malden. Powers was charged with manslaughter but discharged as the incident deemed accidental. In other news, union strikes in Providence and Lynn, plumbing wage talks, and a fire destroying the Colonial Theatre in Nashua.
Crown Princess Gustave Adolph of Sweden, formerly Princess Margaret of Connaught, died in Stockholm this afternoon. Her death ends a royal era and leaves the monarchy to mourn a long serving patroness and royal figure.
Four firefighters at Station 1 led by Chief A. A. Courcelle and Capt. Lem F. Pollard resigned Friday after noon, citing a wage disagreement with the Board of Aldermen Finance Committee. Firemen from uptown filled the vacancies as talks continued, with plans to stay on duty two weeks after the next Aldermen meeting. Mayor Dunn expressed surprise at the action.
New York and the East remained calm through noon as federal state and city authorities prepared for May Day patrols. The Justice Bureau of Investigation reported no violence nationwide. Police fortified routes with 11 000 officers in New York City and Governor's Island guards were ready.
