President calls for treaty leak inquiry in Senate probe
President Wilson in a cablegram urged the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to thoroughly prosecute the leak of the German Peace Treaty copies to private interests in New York. He said it was undesirable to officially publish the text during ongoing negotiations and that possession or disclosure of the official text was improper. The inquiry also subpened Jacob Schiff, Thomas Pammont, H. P. Davison, Paul Warburg, J. P. Morgan and Frank A. Vanderlip to expose exchanges with Morgan and Co. and its Paris London agents. Lamont asked Acting Secretary Polk to testify. In New York the full text of the treaty was brought to the U S by Francis Hunt for syndication in copyrighted sections.
