Tenants and several residents escaped as the fire, which required Morris Wilson to be rescued from a second floor, was brought under control within an hour.
An advertisement asserts catarrh is widespread and constitutional, not local. Hall's Catarrh Medicine by F. J. Cheney & Co. of Toledo is promoted as an internal remedy that cures by affecting the blood and mucous surfaces. A $100 bounty is offered for any failure to cure. C B McLam of Ryegate refused jury duty claiming conscientious objection due to Covenanter beliefs. He said he would not take an oath and questioned his name on the Ryegate checklist. Judge Fish excused him, reportedly the first such objector in the county court. The Ryegate Covenanter church is noted as unique in the state.
The December term of Caledonia county court, adjourned from December 19, 1919, reopened at St Johnsbury Tuesday morning with Judge Frank L. Fish of Vergennes presiding. A new jury was empanelled and given the standard instructions.
Representative Gallivan charges that many distinguished service medals went to officers who never left Washington while others who served overseas received fewer honors. He calls for a full congressional investigation into the decoration process and the influence of personal connections on awards.
Alson Brown aged 81 of Newport died at his niece Mrs. Benjamin Inman’s home from heart failure. Born in Burke Hollow, son of Cy and Mrs Abel Brown, he never married. He lived in Newport 21 years, then Northfield with his brother Halsey Brown, and returned to Newport to reside with his niece. Funeral Friday forenoon with Rev. Arthur V. Allen officiating at Landsdon Center burial at Lyndon Center.
