The New Year’s Eve ball at School Hall, hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Order of Railway Conductors, drew strong social and financial success. Credit goes to Mrs Charles Hayes and the auxiliary team who organized the event, leaving nothing undone for enjoyment. One hundred fourteen couples attended.
Vermont will appoint a fair price commissioner to fix prices of all ties of life and work with the department of justice to prosecute profiteering. W A Bullard of Burlington has received a letter from Howard Figg asking for names of competent men.
The New Year’s Eve social at the Masonic Temple drew a large attendance and praise for the entertainment committee. Frank H. Brooks led vocal music with a strong list of singers, and Miss Anna P. Burke joined in the performances. The program included readings, a grand march, dancing to Wilkie’s orchestra, and a midnight Father Time procession with a white-clad girl.
An AP report notes Democratic and Republican leaders in the Senate held talks on modifying reservations to the Peace Treaty. Lodge met with McNary and other lawmakers to gauge how far the mild reservationist group would go, while Hitchcock conferred with Swanton and King on Article 10, with no agreement reached.
City Mission in St Johnsbury gave 87 boys and girls and six mothers a New Year party with theater at the Please U. Gift bags with candy fruit and a “Happy New Year” decoration followed a banquet at Grace Methodist with Sargent Bros. orchestra. Hosts Mrs Heywood and Elks lodge provided the day of entertainment and a hot dinner.
In St Johnsbury two fires cause heavy damage to Robert Mackinnon home and Carl Hopkins car. Raymond Stinson, three, dies after ingesting laxative pills laced with swychnine and belladonna found on a cupboard shelf following his father's purchase of the bottle. The incident occurred New Year’s Eve. a doctor was unable to save the child. The fires also include the accidental death of the Stinson child’s mother and father’s injuries.
