Evening Star Lodge and Rebekahs of Newport marked 101 years of Odd Fellowship with a supper and entertainment at Pastime Hall. More than 175 people attended a meal served by the Rebekahs, with supper from 6 to 8 o clock. The menu included scalloped potatoes and sliced ham.
State Committeeman Harry H. Carr announced the Republican state convention will be in Montpelier at City Hall on Wednesday May 26. The gathering will convene at 10 o'clock and will choose eight delegates and eight alternates to the Republican National Convention in Chicago on June 8, 1920, with Congressman Porter H Dale presiding.
Agua Prieta Sonora Apr 28 The revolutionary movement began in Sonora has spread into Chihuahua with additional Carranza military leaders joining the rebels Dispatches today say Carranza government is rapidly losing ground in Northern Mexico without bloodshed.
Carranza officials report fighting in Chihuahua City between revolt and loyal troops. Two thousand troops from Torreon and six thousand from Zacatecas are being rushed to Chihuahua City to quell the uprising after a new communication line reached 20 miles north of the state capitol.
Burlington residents plan a Roosevelt Trail tour extending from Portland to St Johnsbury to promote road development. The trip will start in Burlington, pass through Montpelier, and end with a good roads meeting in St Johnsbury hosted by the Commercial Club with speakers Bates McIntosh Stocker and Lawrence. Residents from Montpelier and Burlington will join, each paying their own hotel costs.
Rain stopped play as the Eastern League opener in New Haven was postponed. April 28 saw the weather wash out all scheduled games, delaying the start of the season for the league in the city.
Major General Leonard Wood lost ground in his fight for the Republican presidential nomination in returns from three states. In Ohio Harding defeated Wood. New Jersey vote was very close. Massachusetts delegates-at-large for Wood were defeated by the Big Four. Boston dispatch notes Republican and Democratic delegations chosen. Lodge led the Big Four. Democrats elected by wide margins over OConnell.
Columbus report shows Warren C. Harding leading Leonard Wood by over 10 000 votes with results from all but 141 of 5 882 precincts counted in Ohio on April 28. The Ohio senator's lead reflects strong Republican support and sets Harding on course for the presidential nomination.
