Paris dispatch reports German press proposes supplying materials and labor for France's reconstruction. Analysts note the plan would let Germany profit from wartime destruction, while Britain and the U S may be unable to assist.
Paris reports German newspapers accusing Berlin of bad faith by sending a courier to the Versailles Conference. Berlin cabinet delays on terms, gloom in official circles, and debate over whether to accept or reject terms. Official opinion favors Wilson’s program and a firm stand, not a referendum. Germany views itself as a nation nearing negotiated peace with weaker partners.
Vermont delegations prepare for a Tuesday review at Camp Devens near Boston with General March expected. The 1st Ammunition train may miss arrival. Vermonters split for parade or stay for the review. Limerick and Dublin report rising strikes as Ireland edges toward independence, with warnings of national labor action and government opposition.
St Johnsbury reports a quota just over 407000 with fast subscriptions coming in by noon. Mrs. W H Young chairs a house to house canvass while centers like St Johnsbury Centre report 10960. Kirby town shows 3050 of a 5000 goal. Chicago native C H Morse subscribes 2500 for the town and 2500 more for St Johnsbury proper. The drive asks that under 10000 dollar subscriptions be filled in full, while larger pledges may be prorated. Citizens urged to subscribe promptly as the campaign continues and aims for the largest over subscription and subscriber count.
The New York Episcopalian divine Dr Hawkes born in 1798 in New Bern North Carolina died there in 1860. He used aliases Lambert Lilly Schoolmaster Frater and Uncle Philip and authored The Early History of the Southern States published under Lambert Lilly Schoolmaster in 1882.
In Limerick and Dublin crowds assemble in quiet demonstrations. Speakers provoke lively street parades then disperse, resuming discussions on corners. Violence is rare.
