Funeral services for the late Mrs. Tarlton were held at her Main street Newport home Thursday afternoon. Rev. L A Edwards, pastor of the First Church, conducted the rites as the community mourned the loss. Continued on page five.
At a Newport Chamber of Commerce Housing Committee meeting in YMCA rooms, several housing plans were discussed and recommendations prepared for the April 7 board meeting. The entertainment committee also discussed plans for a forthcoming special Chamber gathering, signaling an active season ahead.
Supt. W H Youngline receives a resignation letter from M B Hillegas Montpelier state commissioner of education asking him to step down at end of the current year. State law allows higher town superintendents to be engaged by the state, a change St Johnsbury has used recently. Continued on part two.
Marblehead Mass April 2 factory owners announce widespread shutdowns as turn shoe workers press for wage increases. One plant closed immediately and another to shut tomorrow, affecting about one thousand workers. Manufacturers say large increases would force business failure.
Washington April 2 rail unions and employers failed to reach agreement on railroad worker wages after a joint conference. President Wilson may decide next steps as Railway Labor Board is to be named under the Transportation Act. Officials say they are giving the act a fair trial despite not endorsing its provisions.
Local mothers wives and sisters of Johnsboro American Legion members raise a substantial fund to purchase a silk flag for Legion functions. Contributions are welcomed through Mrs. BE Ey nt at No. 11 Portland Street.
