In a noon Sunday game at Willard, local pickup team Estancia routed Hub City 12 to 0. Pitcher G Johnson struck out 22 while yielding only two safeties. two homers boosted the score. Lineup included W Dillard C, G Johnson P, H Dillard 1B, P Johnson 2B, Comer 83d Base, Wilkerson SS, Booth LF, Brashears CF, Lee RF.
Memorial Day observance details outlined by Estancia veterans. John P. Blaney serves as chairman with T. S. Smith as secretary. A 10:30 a.m. May 29 march to the M E Church for a sermon by Rev. B F Summers. Decorations follow on May 30 with graveside services in the local cemetery.
F F Jennings of Willard and Rev T E Neal of the M B Church South passed through Estancia Friday. Rev W C Grant went to Melrose NM Friday to bring his family to Estancia. They will arrive about Wednesday of next week.
Shepherd, who has been employed at the Romero Planing Mill, has moved back to the ranch near Stanley arranging family duties and livestock oversight.
The family of L. W. Jackson extends heartfelt thanks to friends who supported them during the illness death and burial of their beloved wife and mother.
Sheriff and Mrs Julius Meyer and Mr and Mrs N D Meyer traveled to Albuquerque last Sunday in a new Schacht Auto and returned Tuesday. Nick says the car climbed the hills like a bird.
F W Woods and his sister in law Mrs B L Woods were in town Wednesday. Woods says he mails each News copy to friends in El Paso, giving the single issue a double service. Mrs J W Collier travels to Wichita Kansas for a visit with her parents and to try living at a lower altitude.
Mr and Mrs R J Sargent came from the farm north of town on Wednesday to plant currant bushes. Mrs Sargent came for health reasons but her health has improved rapidly and she now enjoys outdoor work in the garden, showing gains in health and strength.
A party from Estancia spent Saturday night at Oger's ranch with many staying over Sunday. The group included Misses Lena Ortiz Amada Ortiz Lucile Fielder Zella Edna Roberts and several men led by Mr and Mrs Kelley Mr and Mrs Van Stone Neal Sam Jenson Frank Stanhart L A Rousseau and Earl Scott. There was plentiful food and a pleasant evening anticipated for all attendees.
Superintendent C R Burt announces an Eighth Grade Promotion Examination at the Estancia school house on Friday and Saturday June 17 and 18, 1910. Students who failed the April exam may retake. those with grades above 85 may be retained and need not write on those subjects. Exam begins at 7 30 a m with the same rules as the April test.
Hurl Moulton and wife of Lucia drove over on Thursday. A J Green returned from New Kirk Oklahoma yesterday evening. Jesus Candelaria, chairman of the board of county commissioners, was in Estancia Monday. Pablo Valdez resigned from EH Romero and left for Las Vegas last Sunday.
The Board of Trustees did not hold a meeting on Wednesday night as Don and Bond were absent from the city and Mr Stub blefield was ill.
J R Marsh of J R Marsh & Son six miles west says he is farming on a grand scale this year. His 290 acre crop includes 40 acres of corn 50 of potatoes 40 of beans and 40 of millet with millet to be sown soon. Corn is up and a wood stand indicates strong prospects.
J. F. Lasater at Las Palomas New Mexico reports improvement at the springs. Mrs. W. Smith, wife of the Herald editor, has grown weaker causing family anxiety. J. A. Fry arrived from Yuma Arizona seeking a new location as he plans to settle nearby. Still artes
There will be a communion service at Mclntosh next Sunday May 22 at 11 am Special music will be provided by the choir Rev Randolph Carver will preach All are invited.
L. D. Pollard, who had a stroke of paralysis some time ago, is reported as slowly improving.
Bricklayers on the Santa Fe courthouse report strong progress with the basement and first story completed. Miss Maude Hancock, long employed in public schools, is rehired for the coming year as work continues on the second story.
Knight uses a private pumping plant while advancing an ion proposition to water as much as ten acres, signaling an early stage start.
A deal closed this Tuesday transferring Welrose property to 8. U. King and wife in exchange for 32 acres of their land north and northwest of Estancia. The trade was with Rev. W. C. Grant.
J M Elgin drove to Albuquerque and back recounting a big rain there and hoping for a fair division. Loveless of J B Dillard, from the City Meat Market, visited the farm, loading chicks and crops for exchange of eggs and vegetables. Dillard traded his Oklahoma farm for the Blunt place northeast of Estancia.
I. N. Shirley and James Walker purchased the Tom Monk quarter section adjoining the townsite for 2500 dollars. The improvements are of little value, but the investment is a good one.
W A Martin representing the 15th National Irrigation Congress which will be held in Pueblo Colorado September 26 to 30 was in Estancia last Friday to inspect the local irrigation project.
Mr. Coomer general manager of the New Mexico Central was in our city today. L A Bond arrived home this morning from Ocean Park California. Following doctors advice the family went to Ocean Park on the coast near Los Angeles where physicians report signs of improvement and hope for final recovery.
Miss Goldie Short departed last Thursday for Dayton Ohio where she will enroll in school and stay with an aunt during her visit.
Bond's store clerks report Clara is improving and Mr Bond expects to return by the end of the week. The news will please her many friends in Estancia.
Mrs. Fred HH Ayers and her son Edgar traveled to Princeton Illinois to visit her father who cares for his 94 year old mother in poor health. Ayers plans to stay several weeks and return later.
H G Bedford displayed a gold sample on Monday from a fresh Pedernales claim. The Estancia prospectors appear to have the needed perseverance and potential for promising finds in the area.
Antelope Springs residents attended two sermons last Sunday. Rev. W.C. Grant preached at 11 a.m. and Rev. H. Richter at 3 p.m. Both services drew strong attendance and were well received by worshippers.
Jesse McGhee, after a Arizona trip, renewed his News subscription on Saturday. He plans to read Campbell's Scientific Farm for the next year and urges continued delivery.
A drill rig and 64 foot derrick are being erected on J. M. Shaw's farm north of town for a test well. Bowler sent a driller instead of himself and Pettijohn began construction but halted awaiting additional timbers. Work will resume quickly to determine water flow prospects.
On Wednesday afternoon May 18 at the home of Mr and Mrs Julian Tuttle Miss Bessie Marsh and Mr Walter Huffman were married by Rev Randolph Carver with Miss Myrtle Tuttle and Miss Lelia Laws as witnesses. The bride, known for millinery work here and a farm east of town, and the groom, a man of means with real estate in eastern New Mexico and Missouri, are congratulated.
Astronomers report a total lunar eclipse occurring Monday night with partial phases starting at 8 46 Mountain time and total phases from 10 09 to 10 59, ending at 12 22 a m. The event is worth viewing even with any kind of glasses and an additional eclipse is slated for November 16.
Assistant superintendent of public instruction from Santa Fe, Estancia visitor, lost his Torreon area farm home in a night blaze. The $1500 loss, limited insurance, marks a second fire hazard in recent years. The La Floresta ranch includes irrigation on 80 acres, 200 fruit trees, 15 acres of alfalfa, and a 70 by 100 foot fish pond seven feet deep.
Miss Fannie Purvis visiting County Treasurer M B Atkin son's family arranged to irrigate eighty acres of her Sullivan Illinois farm north of town She also plans to build a house on the farm and make it her future home.
