The Santa Fe Railroad will sink a 1000 foot test well near Willard in the Estancia Valley to determine artesian water presence. Engineer J W Key has authority to begin, with prior Willard well water cited as excellent. If artesian water is found, it will settle whether the venture is pumping driven and benefit the valley and its people.

Private School Plans Summer Term Start At Jone 5
School directors push for a private school term starting around June 5 to benefit unemployed children. Social Hop Brightens Estancia Youth Evening
Estancia young people enjoyed a social hop Wednesday evening at the Salszar building. Music by Whitlock and Duke kept the crowd lively until early hours. At eleven they moved to the Estancia Hotel Restaurant where ice cream cake and strawberries were served. All reported a good time.

Death of Ambrosio Lueras at seventeen
Ambrosio Lueras son of Mr and Mrs Saturnino Lueras of Mestanita died last Saturday morning from inflammatory rheumatism after a six year illness. Funeral held Sunday afternoon at Manzano with Father Gauthier officiating. He was regarded as bright, intelligent and industrious. He spoke both Spanish and English, aided by his parents, and his death drew wide community sympathy.

Old Veteran Dead Thomas C DeLong Civil War Vet
Thomas C DeLong a Civil War veteran and G A R member died at his home on South Broadway from complications of diseases at age 63. He served as quartermaster sergeant of Troop A First California Cavalry and lived in Nebraska after the war. Survived by wife and two sons H D DeLong an engineer on the Santa Fe and G D DeLong foreman of Burlington shops at Havelock. Funeral held Monday at Lead Avenue Methodist Church at 2 30 Rev Thomas Harwood officiated with Grand Army of the Republic rites. The News extends sympathy. Al Hoy recently manager of the Dunlavy store Torrance has moved to Espanola to work for Bond Bros.

Grocer Arnot Returns from Estancia Plans Wool Purchases
George Arnot, manager of Gross, Kelly & Co., visited the Estancia plains from Kennedy to Torrance on the Santa Fe Central. He bought large wool clips for early delivery and selected fine fleeces for a territorial fair, including a 26 pound fleece. He praises the plains as well arranged, notes lambing is strong, and predicts lamb survival around two percent. Shearing aims to finish by about June 1.
