Augustine Villa was arrested at Los Lunas Valencia county on charges of setting fire to Hipolito Montayo’s dwelling in Alta Vista last week. He traveled with a woman claiming to be his sister who accompanied him in the neighborhood. Arrangements are being made to bring him back for a preliminary hearing.
Miss Verde Corbett to give piano recitals in Willard on March 28 and in Pirancia on March 29 with local talent. She is a Kansas City College of Music graduate and plans to open Estancia and Willard studios on April 1 to accept pupils.
The Texico Brownwood railroad contract is awarded to McCabe and Steen, with work starting within six weeks from now. The line connects to the Pacific east via the Santa Fe system following the Belen cut-off. Bond sales of 98 million dollars funded the project, and the line will pass through level prairie terrain requiring minimal bridging. Mrs. Frank J. Dye has been ill with peritonitis this week.
Supt Jaramillo surveys Torrance County schools during a six day visit visiting Tajique Estancia Torreon Manzano Creches Punta and other towns. He notes attentive teachers, translations from English to Spanish, patriotic programs and growing student reading from first and second readers. Some classes were suspended due to local conditions but overall progress is reported.
The Estancia Commercial Club met at Walker Hall on Tuesday and adopted By-Laws preparatory to a permanent organization. A letter from Manager Stockard discussed the Torrance Albuquerque automobile route, noting the exact path was undecided but Estancia would be considered. The club aims to attract projects to boost Estancia and Torrance County. The next meeting was moved to Friday at 2 PM to elect permanent officers.
Faustin Campos, 23, was fatally injured while working on a cylinder in a ranch well near Willard. An iron bar struck him causing a fall into eight feet of water where he drowned before help arrived. He was a well known local resident and was buried at Punta de Agua.
Carpenters uncover a .33 caliber leaden bullet embedded in pine while preparing wood for window casings at the Asher Building. The bullet appears shot long ago, wood grew over the entrance. Asher keeps the block as a souvenir. bystander notes New Mexico’s mineral wealth.
The Monday night dance in the new Asher building drew a very large attendance in the valley. Young people reported a most enjoyable time and continued festivities until about three o'clock in the morning.
