School Districts Vote Set For April Sixth In 1908

Three Wounded in Amateur Battle at Hatley Ranch

At Hatley ranch northeast of town an altercation last Monday morning left Louis McKinley shot in the abdomen and seriously wounded, with Wesley Halloway and L. E. Hallsy also hurt. McKinley and Halloway worked for J. E. Pauley on a well drill. Hatley ordered the workers to stop, threats followed, and shots were fired. McKinley was taken to a Santa Fe hospital, where his condition remained critical but improving slightly.

Silverton School District Receives Official Formation Notice

Superintendent Jar amillo announced the formation of Silverton School District No. 17 in TorFrance County. Boundaries begin at the southeast corner of section 32, township 8 north, range 8 east, then proceed north one mile, east one mile, north five miles to the town boundary, west three miles, south six miles along the township edge, then east two miles back to the start.

Directors Elected For Estancia Public Service Company

The Estancia Public Service Company elected directors for the coming year: M. B. Atkinson James Walker E W Roberson A H Garnett and J J Lasater. The board will meet soon to decide on artesian well plans as drilling reaches about 310 feet with a rotary drill needed to go deeper.

Emigrant Cars Arrive From Polo City to Estancia

Three emigrant carts were brought to Estancia from Polo City Oklahoma by R J Porter D M Short and C J Sicumons. They carried household goods farming implements seven head of work horses nine cows and hogs. They intend to settle the valley and engage in yeoman work to develop the area.

Record land office boom in New Mexico territory

The federal land office reports February homestead entries surpassing all prior months in Santa Fe with January and February breaking records. New Year activity exceeds 700 entries in Santa Fe and 1,200 across three other offices, prompting staff moves and the creation of a fifth land district at Tucumcari. Population in the territory exceeds 5,000 since January.

Second Home Stead Entries Under New 1903 Law

Under a new law approved February 8 1903 U S citizens with necessary qualifications may file a second homestead entry. The act allows those who had made a prior homestead entry but lost forfeited or abandoned it to receive homestead benefits as if the prior entry never occurred. Applicants must provide former entry description and date. Fraud cancellations and relinquishments for valuable consideration are excluded.

Three Deaths in Valley This Week

Three residents died in the Estancia district this week. S K Rush, editor of the Messenger, died Wednesday night in Moriarty after a brief illness caused by peritonitis. his remains were taken to Delphus Kansas for interment. J G Mussen, near Batancia, died at the Alimo Hotel after long ill health, a Mason and Irish native with no known relatives. funeral to be conducted by the local lodge. Perfecta McAfee died at 10:30 a m yesterday in Estancia, a Las Cruces native with four daughters and one son. funeral to be held in Chilili with remains moved there yesterday morning.

Fined for Killing Game Out of Season in Torreon

Gabino Padilla of Manzano was tried before Justice Zamora on a Territorial Game Warden warrant for killing wild turkey out of season. He was found guilty, fined $60, and the $50 value of the birds led to a costly offense. two birds were killed at $25 each, with vestments remitted.

Sunday School Institute at Baptist Church Celebrated

The Sunday School Institute held last Friday to Monday attracted strong attendance and interest. Participants fulfilled topics cheerfully and creditably while Rev Rupard delivered inspiring talks proving masters in the field. The local pastor Rev D B Jackson also earned much credit for his tireless efforts in making the meetings a success.

Farewell Reception Honors Mrs. Heady Near Estancia

A farewell reception was hosted by Mrs. L. B. Miller four miles north of Estancia for Mrs. T. J. Heady. The social event featured cake and coffee and drew guests including Mr. and Mrs. Heady and several local residents.

Rock Island Captures Vaughn Townsite Stealthily

Vaughn New Mexico reports a dramatic railway land grab as Rock Island and E P S W stake a claim to Vaughn. Santa Fe had spent years shaping a vast townsite with yards depots and water works. A dawn Rock Island special moved in to establish a rival townsite, altering the race for Vaughn’s growth and control.
