Banking Revival In New Mexico Report
Traveling Auditor Charles V. Safford reports to Governor Curninal that as of July 1 there were 75 national and territorial banks in New Mexico with capital of 3,274,086 and assets and liabilities totaling 24,608,651. Since January, six more banks opened, with a capital rise to 2,814,500 and liabilities at 31,086,089. Over six years there has been no bank failure, and territorial banks hold a 44 percent reserve, well above National Banking Act requirements. A private San Marcial bank failed once, but under 1909 law those banks will come under territorial supervision, illustrating southwest business revival and strict oversight.
