Cut-off to Open for Traffic in November
J W Kendrick vice president of the Santa Fe system visited Los Angeles on an inspection tour. He said the Belen cut-off will likely open November 1 for traffic improving passenger and especially freight service with a maximum grade reduced from 185 to 65 feet. A new freight depot in Los Angeles is planned. He noted nationwide crop prospects remain superior with strong business.

Bad Check Artist Sent to Texas for Forging Cases
Sheriff A R Anderson of Houston arrived in Santa Fe to take back Martin Scott alias M B Ray who is wanted in Texas for forging checks on the Santa Fe Railway system. Scott was arrested at Estancia months ago on Wells Fargo Express Company complaint and denied the charges claiming innocence. He formerly worked for the Santa Fe Railway at Houston and used company checks for various amounts before fleeing. Captain Fornett said Torrance County will waive the local charge and hand Scott to the Texas officer New Mexican.

Convention of Wool Growers in New Mexico Opens Draft Program
The original draft program for the sheep and wool growers convention of New Mexico to meet in Albuquerque September 18 was completed by the arrangements committee. The document lists speakers and sessions from September 18 to 21 with officials from Albuquerque Las Vegas Salt Lake City and Cheyenne among those slated to participate and discuss grazing, dipping, lambing, shearing and rams.

Atkinson Buys Town Property Near School
M B Atkinson, rancher northwest of town, bought the W Walker residence in Alta Vista to move his family closer to the school. The home, recently revamped, sits in good condition after two winters of wear, saving children from cold four mile drives. Printer Proves to be Check Artist
A newspaper office describes Harry Cra den alias Richardson alias Jackson leaving town after attempting forgery. He forged ten and twenty dollar checks at Gregg's place, fled before arrest, and destroyed blanks to hide the crime. Investigators note the forger appeared skilled and may seek future printing work.
Lightning Kills Three Horses at Berry Ranch
Lightning struck during a thunder shower killing three valuable horses at the Berry ranch northwest of town. The grazing mares and colt died instantly. mares valued at over three hundred dollars. Mrs. Berry shares in the loss and sorrow.

Rain Steeps Valley With Pleasant Showers
A spell of good rains drenched the valley north of town on Monday afternoon. Tuesday brought local showers, and evening rain extended to Estancia and areas southward. Estancia measured fifty six one hundredths of an inch.
