Fire Destroys Editor House and Library
Lightning struck the News editor's residence Wednesday evening, burning it to the ground with the entire contents. Neighbors could not determine the fire’s origin as the building was a mass of flames. only a single chair was moved out before the door was crushed in. Loss estimated around twelve hundred dollars, partly insured, including a library of four to five hundred volumes. The News files were saved, having been moved weeks earlier. The two days old baby of Mr and Mrs L J Adams of 212 New York avenue died yesterday. Funeral from Strongs chapel at 2 PM with Rev John R Gass of the Presbyterian church conducting brief services. Interment at Fairview cemetery. Mr Adams employed by Southwestern Brewery and Ice Co and came from Estancia. Mrs Adams formerly Miss Dow of Tajique New Mexico.

Gotton Seed Meal Bread Sample Shown in Town
W H Simmons visited last Saturday with a bread made from cottonseed meal flour. The loaf is a brown graham like bread, baked without shortening as the flour is rich enough to need no fats. It is described as tasty and wholesome. Flour came from Chillicothe Texas brought by Alma Simmons who just returned from that place.

Surprise party for Weaver family crowds valley visitors
A Monday evening surprise for the Weaver family was planned and carried out by many local youths. Despite heavy rain a large crowd gathered and enjoyed games and music before departing late, wishing the Weavers an early return to the valley.
New Mexico State Exposition to Open at Albuquerque
The Thirtieth Annual New Mexico Fair and First State Exposition, the Chanticleer fair, will hold the biggest poultry show yet as part of a statehood celebration. Governor Mills will preside at the carnival opening, moving the capital to Albuquerque for the fair week, with eastern visitors expected to attend.

Heavy Rains Affect Estancia With Severe Lightning
Heavy rains swept Estancia on Monday and Wednesday with more rain yesterday afternoon. Thunder and lightning accompanied the downpour, striking Dr. Ewing’s residence and damaging the roof and weather boarding. No serious injuries were reported though furniture was shaken and a scared occupant was noted.

Mountainair Chautauqua Opens With Welcoming Morning
A little after 5 30 Monday morning August 1st the first train of Chautauquans arrived at Mountainair depot greeted by Secretary McCoy. The grounds feature a cedar pine grove with a seven hundred seat tabernacle, 25 cent meals, and full camp facilities. The Cartwright Concert Company opened the program with classic and patriotic music led by Prof Cartwright Mrs Cartwright and Miss Dorothy Cartwright received high praise. By day two tents numbered about thirty and a grand rally outlined department work across nine fields. Denton Crowl revived Sam Jones lecture in the evening. The event aims to foster education religion science and physical culture amid a hospitable setting. Carpenters of the NM railroad resumed work after a brief layoff.
