In Columbia on August 5, Governor Blease, urged by Judge R. C. Watts, commuted John Henry Drummond's life sentence to ten years for murder. Anna Drummond, mother of the 12 year old boy, will remain jailed in Spartanburg with her nursing infant until the child is older, to be followed by transfer to the penitentiary. The judge cited humanity and the young child in her arms.
Arch McCormac, colored, charged with selling whiskey, given a hearing in Judge McRae's court Saturday and held for trial at the September term. Sheriff Lane captured him near the State line while pursuing a gang thought involved in a store robbery at Hamer weeks earlier. McCormac named Daniel McCollum Poss Fox Dan Murphy Dock Bethea Jno McNair and J W Moore as accomplices. others were arrested but released for lack of evidence. Mr and Mrs E T Elliott are visiting Hendersonville North Carolina for a few weeks.
Columbus August 4 special. Comptroller General Jones favors repeating last year’s call for impartial enforcement of the income tax law. He argues the law fails due to weak county auditor control and uneven enforcement. He notes eight counties file no returns, while overall revenue remains low despite higher incomes, with only Richland and Charleston contributing most of the tax.

A four year scholarship from Dillon county to the Citadel is announced. The award, valued around $1200, will be examined in the courthouse next Friday August 11 at nine o'clock, with R S Rogers County Superintendent of Education coordinating. B S will not be in the superintendent's office on Saturday the 2th.

Keene Brown and Clarence Driggers, well known Columbia youths, drowned on Ridgewood Lake while in a boat with J W Parrent and J B Lewis and a boy. The craft leaked, water entered, and the boat sank about 200 yards from shore near the pavilion. Parrent survived. cause suspected shifting weight and a leaking boat.
The Maine wreck lies buried in mud after cofferdam water removal, with the stern about 37 feet deep and the bow section raised. Engineers plan mud suction and dissection to expose the ruined hull, hoping to locate Assistant Engineer Merritt and likely other recovered remains over several months.
Miss Mabel Carpenter Thompson, superintendent of Anderson County Hospital, died after a kerosene lamp exploded while a plumber showed a defect. Nurse Miss Josie Moffett was badly burned and hospital orderly Charles Barnes suffered burns and a head injury. The blast occurred during upkeep of the sterilizing unit. Miss Moffett and Barnes aided in fighting the fire. Thompson, a native of Damascus, Ohio, had recently moved to Anderson from Dayton and was about 30.

An early morning crash on the Asheville highway left five aboard the Carolina Special seriously hurt or injured near Hendersonville North Carolina. First aid arrived from a passing chauffeur who sped the injured to Kanuga Club for care.
Special Representative J Edwin Ellerbe of South Carolina’s 6th district returned to Washington after a pleasant trip with the Rivers and Harbours committee along the Ohio and other rivers. He was hosted by the city of Pittsburg, which is keen on channel improvements. Mrs Ellerbe and Miss Ellerbe accompanied him. Mrs Ellerbe authored a widely published poem whose 50 000 copies will be printed for distribution by admirers in the Western states.
Special Lowery Muse, a Verdery county planter, was wounded last night near his home when a negro man named Leily Fisher shot him with a .4 caliber pistol. Muse was taken to an Augusta hospital. doctors fear for his recovery as officers search for Fisher who escaped on a Seaboard train at Cana.
