An explosion in the smokeless department at the powder works near Santa Cruz killed Maxie Grim and fatally burned James Howard. About 650 pounds of powder for the cruiser Boston went up in smoke. Howard's clothing was burned away and his body is covered with burns. Cause of the blast is unknown.
