One miner dead and four trapped as a mine fire rages in Luke Fiedler colliery. Fifty-five workers escape, with smoke and toxic gas filling the mine. Rescue attempts fail. four missing believed smothered. flooding may idle 900 workers for months.
Brief report notes several people were slightly injured and are now in a critical condition. Officials estimate poverty loss will exceed $100000.
A Foo Choo dispatch reports the Min river port closed to shipping with Foo Choo tied to trade routes to China and Japan. Chemulpo notes 14 Japanese transports in harbour and 7,800 troops landed since Sept. 27 along with 4,000 more to Seoul.
A violent storm swept the southern coast with winds over sixty miles per hour at Pensacola Florida. Wires were down and residents faced widespread disruption as authorities assessed damage and injuries.
A gulf cyclone reached Florida and struck Pensacola in the morning. Winds near 64 mph were recorded at Pensacola at noon. Wires down after 5 pm between Pensacola and nearby areas hindered damage reports. The storm moves northeast, Tallahassee notes strong gale and rising concern.
A northeast hurricane at Moss Point Mississippi causes several ships to beach including the British bark Orlovick the American bark Caria Capon and the Norwegian bark Frietod with lighters loaded with lumber also stranded. The storm rages with winds still furious and shipowners report limited damage to river shipping though vessels remain grounded at Ship and Horn islands.
A westbound Rock Island freight derailed at Sleepy Hollow near here at 6 p.m. Twenty cars went into the gorge. Engineers Geraldine Nolan, Marshall Lower, and Charles E. Demsey, all of Trenton Missouri, were killed. Conductor Sam Vainhook injured.
A southbound Asheville and Spartanburg freight runaway descended Saluda mountain at 1 a.m. The train ran four miles to the grade bottom before derailing. engine and 16 cars piled into a deep cut. Engineer Berm and a Black crewman are missing. Fireman York is believed dead under wreckage.
John Ravell, a farmer near Ironton Wood, Mich, and his 5 year old son were killed when giant powder exploded while thawing it in the stove oven. His wife and 6 year old daughter were severely injured and expected to die. The other three children survived with non life threatening injuries.
New York Democrats, meeting in the evening under the Democratic club, ratified the nominations of David B. Hill for governor Daniel B. Lockwood for lieutenant governor and Judge Charles F Brown for judge of the court of appeals.
The U S steamer Mohican and revenue cutter Corwin arrive in San Francisco from Behring Sea. Mohican lost two propeller blades and sailed slowly under sail and steam. Both ships faced heavy gales. Corwin lost starboard davits and two boats were smashed. Bear remains in the North and won’t reach port until December.
The tropical storm has moved from the Western Florida coast northeastward to Southern Georgia with its center near Savannah. It is attended by severe southeast gales on the South Carolina coast and is expected to continue northeastward, bringing dangerous gales to the Middle Atlantic and Southern New England coasts on Wednesday.
Bristow Tenn Oct 10 The Washington and Chattanooga limited wreck Sunday last proved more fatal than expected. Engineer Sam Smith has died and Mail Agent Tucker cannot survive the day. Three others believed to be injured or missing in the incident.

Including interest storage and insurance the loss exceeds $1,500,000. Suspicion centers on ex Senator James G Fair with possible partners George Whittell or Luning Camp.
The government finishes a life saving station on Franklin square Minnesota Point at a cost of 3468 dollars. Captain Abbey of New York has accepted the structure. Eight men will crew it, arriving next spring. Boats will serve the lake side with a smaller bay side house planned for a single boat. The building is described as neat looking.

In New York on Oct 10 Die Weber by Gerhart Hauptmann was staged at the Thalia theater with Herr Most and 50 anarchists making their acting debut. The house was filled and applause was tremendous. The production aimed to raise funds for the anarchist society of New York’s literary fund.
The Nelson administration appointed this commission to solicit and disburse cyclone relief met at the capitol in St Paul. C. L. West of Austin was elected chairman and John Frank of Le Roy secretary. The body adjourned subject to the chairman's call.

The Moscow telegram from the Cologne Gazette reports Russia will dispatch five Siberian battalions, two zobias of Cossacks, and three artillery batteries to the frontier to check Chinese marauders. Command will be by General Meschenk.
Berlin reports in The Reichsanzeiger that Japan established naval prize courts on September 20 and that one court has been sitting since September 21 with the supreme court located in Tokio.
Paris reports that French war ships will sail to China under an international agreement already joined by Great Britain Russia Germany and France.
Oct 10 LovarEeNaso Marquez reports a Portuguese official returned after visiting Chief Gungunhana. Natives in the Portuguese territory are in arms men mass along the Incomati river. Women and children sent north. Looting widespread as arms and ammunition pass to natives.
It is understood here that if the czar, as expected, decides on a regency during his absence from Russia, the czarewitch will not be named regent but will be entrusted with the direction of state affairs through a special declaration by the czar. The title regent will be avoided.
Bishop Foss announced on October 10 that he has decided to discontinue a planned methodist appointment. The action affects local churches and clergy assignments within the Minnesota Conference as part of restructuring efforts.
The two Minnesota conferences will be divided into four districts each, creating eight presiding elders. Dr. W. K. Marshall of Minneapolis and Dr. Jennings, formerly conference secretary, are expected to be named as extra presiding elders.

William B Thorne Jr a noted business figure died by his own hand at his father’s Brooklyn residence on Sunday. Thorne was president of Red Star Manufacturing and junior partner at Dingle Co lubricating oils, after a 16 year stint as assistant secretary of the Chicago Milwaukee and St. Paul. He left that post in March and moved with his wife and two children to Brooklyn to partner with his brother in law.
Fred Filgiano, cashier in the Grand Trunk Railway freight office at Hamilton, has suddenly disappeared. Auditors will determine the amount of alleged defalcation, expected to reach nearly 150000 dollars. Filgiano has served as cashier for 15 years with over a million dollars passing through each year.
Portland dispatch reports another arrest in the General W. S. Ayres assassination case. X. N. Steves, a noted lawyer, is charged with murder along with Bunko Kelly and Bob Gaithorn. Steves is held without bail as the investigation continues.
