Sampson Letter Rejected for Counsel by Schley Court
The Schley court refused Rear Admiral Sampson’s request to be represented by counsel, deeming him not a party to the case. Witnesses Hood and McCalla described dispatches to Schley and a Cuban insurgent code. McCalla testified on May 24 at Cienfuegos and on the Eagle signal to Schley that Vera Cruz was not in the harbor.
