Sorghum Sugar Hope for Massachusetts Farmers

Henry B. Blackwell of Boston argues that early amber cane can profitably produce sugar and syrup in New England rivaling Cuba and Germany. He cites trials from 1882 to 1883 showing 16 percent juice sugars, 11 percent crystal sugar, and 4 percent inverted sugar by diffusion, with yields of 9 pounds juice per 100 pounds cane, and advocates reviving a Franklin Massachusetts sugar factory to harness amber cane.
