Judgment Stayed In Martin Schonert Versus Huron College
In a circuit court session before Judge Whiting on Monday March 21 the case of Martin Schonert against Huron College was heard. Schonert served as director of the Musical Department from 1898 to 1901 and received tuition from students as compensation. He also taught German and Civics while living in college rooms whose rent had been waived and later treated as part of German compensation. An oral agreement promised extra German classes for $20 monthly if funds allowed, but no funds remained after the year ended and the trustees had remitted Schonert’s room rent. The defense testimony disputed the room rent as German pay, and a sixty day stay was granted at the college’s request.
