March 11 Athens reports mounting anxiety over the powers final decision on Crete. Greece offers to cede its fleet but insists troops stay to restore order, while a blockade of the Greek coast is not expected before week’s end. Turkish minister reportedly fears for his life amid tensions. Archbishop Temple notes England’s prayers for Crete’s liberty and peace. Reserves arrive from provinces and public enthusiasm rises as Greece’s reply gains general approval.
London reports that competent observers expect the powers to reject Greece's proposals and pursue coercion if needed. The Greek reply is viewed as a bid to ease surrender, with confidence that once Europe acts in unity Greece will yield and comply.

The Cincinnati flood scene grows direr as a thunderstorm adds heavy rain. Captain Bassler of the signal service reports a lake region centered storm with low pressure over the Ohio valley. Rivers south of the Ohio rise, rail lines in parts cut, merchants prep to move goods from danger zones.
Des Moines and surrounding lowlands flood as rivers rise rapidly since Monday night. Heavy rains continue in Northern Iowa and 18 inch ice in the rivers threatens dam and bridge damage with possible city flooding if ice jams break.
Heavy rains melt snow turning Galena streets into rivers for the third time in a year. The electric light plant and several manufactories are flooded while the Chicago and Northwestern railroad remains blockaded as water continues to rise.
Vincennes Indiana March 11 The Wabash River is higher than it has been in 11 years and continues to rise. The rising waters flood lowland areas and threaten nearby property.
Seventy five leading Chicago retailers plan a Great Northern hotel meeting to form an organization aimed at stopping fashionable smuggling by immigrants or returning travelers. They seek congressional revenue-law reforms to curb the abuse and report President McKinley and the House support.
From Salt Lake March 11 a special dispatch says orders have been received at Fort Duchesne to remove intruders from the Uncompahgre Reservation. General Wheaton aims to avoid bloodshed as Captain W N Day with 20 men leaves to execute the order. About 300 remain on the reservation and noncompliers will be taken prisoner and brought to the fort.
News from Brass in the West Coast of Africa says a French force of 400 with white officers occupies Boussa. British Niger company officials mull repelling the incursion by force to defend territory long recognized as British.
Fort Washakie Wy March 11 Chief Washakie the noted head of the Shoshone Indians is dying. The chief 98 years old has spent most of this winter in the hospital at the fort. He has been a great friend of the whites. It is feared his death may provoke trouble as young men may seek war against their old enemies the Arapahoes on the same reservation.
In Ely Minnesota on March 11 100 Zenith mine employees abruptly quit after awaiting overdue wages. The mine recently added shifts and increased activity. The company reports about 10 000 tons of ore in stock awaiting processing.
Miners at Leadville vote to end the eight month strike by a wide margin amid relief cuts and looming managerial indifference. Debs and Wood aided the effort. the camp has spent about four million dollars and suffered about a dozen deaths.
A daylong strike on the Columbia College building affects about 800 workers. The central union threatens a broad building trades strike if disputes are not settled, centered on non union elevator contractors. Several hundred striking shirtmakers return to work while 250 more resume action in the same trade.

The claim alleges ore valued at the Pennsylvania mine owned by Boston and Montana was extracted via underground workings from adjacent mines owned by the defendants.
Ottawa reports Sweden has informed Canada that Professor Andree will depart Stockholm around late June in a balloon to search for the North Pole. Officials in the Northwest Territories and Hudson Bay are instructed to report any sighting of the craft.
Springfield March 11 The Chicago drainage board will be investigated by a special legislative committee to show how 31 million dollars spent on the drainage canal has been used. Revell's resolution for the committee was adopted.
A Constantinople telegraph says the German ironclad Kaserin Augusta fired a blank to Greek Hydra to halt, then Hydra delivered a full broadside. The rumor circulated from Crete and was reported by The Herald in New York.

London reports a looming Greece Turkey clash with Greece defiantly aligned with its national government over Crete. The British reaction centers on a 100 member Commons letter to the Greek king seen as likely misleading about British willingness to join coercive actions.
A Times dispatch from Canea reports foreign warships will land a force at Selino to escort Consul Billiotti to Candamo to contact insurgent chiefs who know him and may aid Moslem deliverance. A heavy gale at landing site. force may be used if insurgents reject proposals. Captains have written to Selino leaders but are ignored. Colonel Vassos continues appointing officials.
J L Hagen of New York for Ward Steamship company announces a new packet line from New Orleans via Pensacola to Tampico and ports in Venezuela, Colombia, and the West Indies. Beginning May 1, 1897, the first steamer sails to Tampico with possible service up to two or three times weekly if demand supports it.
