Tenement Fire on Allen Street Claims Many Lives

A five story tenement on Allen Street in New York was gutted by fire early today, killing at least twenty and injuring about forty while nearly 200 residents faced peril. The blaze, blamed on a kerosene lamp explosion, spread rapidly as crowded rear fire escapes became jammed with rubble and a frozen skylight door hindered escape. Heroic police and firemen, including Lt. Bonner, rescued many, though one policeman was badly injured when a burning plank collapsed. Identified victims include Rachael Solomon and Jacob Solomon among others.
