Murderer of Capt. Nutt slain in Fayette hotel room
A man named James Nutt who boasted of seducing Captain Nutt’s daughter and killing him is himself found dead in a hotel room beside the post office. Dukes, the presumed victim, lay mortally shot with officers nearby. Eyewitnesses describe a quick sequence of revolver shots as Nutt pursued Dukes into the post office and outside toward the Jennings hotel. Police and townspeople reacted with shock as details blurred in the chaotic scene.
