An advertisement extols Syrup of Figs as a pure laxative that cleanses the system and relieves headaches and fevers by acting on the kidneys liver and bowels. It claims wide medical approval and that genuine bottles carry the California Fig Syrup Co name with Syrup of Figs on the package.
Frederick Hellman a 52 year old mason contractor murdered his wife Ipa and four children aged 3 to 11 in a sealed brick cottage at Cornelia and Wood streets and then took his own life. A coroner's inquest revealed a premeditated act planned by Hellman despite early beliefs of accidental death.
Alexander Hester Chicago’s first photographer dies at advanced age. In the 1850s he popularized Minnehaha area views, sending a 1851 Minnehaha Falls daguerreotype to Charles Sumner's brother, who gave it to Longfellow, who praised the photo for inspiring Hiawatha.
Two local assailants fired on Chief of Police Low from cover during a July 8 disturbance in Burnetton Iowa. An officer returned fire, mortally wounding suspect Connelly who was struck in the back. The other suspect fled but is pursued by a posse.
