The Iowa Legislature settled the U S senate contest with John H. Gear the Republican caucus candidate receiving a clear majority in both chambers. In a joint session to canvass the vote Gear is declared United States senator from Iowa.
The Democratic association gathered at 2 PM in St Paul with Mr Foote presiding. P J Smalley reported membership rose from 248 to 1155 and 50000 pamphlets and speeches distributed. The group plans tariff related material this spring. Treasurer Dan Aberle noted 1450 in balance. State organizer C J Buell also reported. A banquet followed at the Ryan in the evening.
The Senate refused to confirm Hornblower as associate justice of the Supreme Court. Senator Vilas of Wisconsin supported him in committee, but a general debate led to a 6 vote rejection after an all day session in Washington.
The opening House session featured Mr. Springer correcting a publication about remarks by Mr. Dolliver. Mr. Reed joked he would not object for Dolliver’s sake as the tariff bill debate resumed. Mr. Wilson began offering committee amendments, starting with a cut in fur duties for batters from 20 to 10 percent.
Milwaukee police believe Pechmann who confessed may have stolen Mrs Schrums money and planted it to benefit his family. Police say the old lady had about 1500 to 2000 dollars, not 40000 as some reports claimed.
From Hawaii to a San Francisco paper a claim she will sue the United States for damages was denied by ex queen’s ministers Samuel Parker and A Patterson. They say the queen will seek arbitration by the United States and remain firm in her throne claim. They met the queen before sailing on the Australia and found her resolute.

The Daily Dry Goods Record reports Amoskeag and Lancaster ginghams priced at 5 cents net, the lowest ever, with new buyers able to choose styles and colors. American sheetings fall to 8 3 4 cents net, a similarly low mark not seen since spring 1891.
A unique shipment passed through Minneapolis from Chicago en route to the Flowery Kingdom. Mongo lians in Chicago raised funds to transport the remains of Chinese workers who died there from 1879 to 1887, burial in native land believed to soothe souls.
Washington January 17 The assistant commissioner of the general land office Mr Bowers plans to ask the supreme court to advance on the calendar the appeal of Dealey convicted of fraudulent entry of land in Turtle Mountain North Dakota linked to E Ashley Mears deals. Dealey was sentenced to 13 months imprisonment and a $1000 fine.
The world's committee of the Young Men's Christian Association, based in Geneva, Switzerland, issues the call for the 18th annual conference of Y M C A members from all lands to convene in London from May 81 to June 6.
The January 17 report notes the first excursion party to the California midwinter fair has arrived in Chicago. The 28 travelers are all from Cleveland.
Milwaugee January 17 The trial of Banker Koetting reveals the looting of South Side Savings bank by Cashier Koetting and President Trumpff. Over ten years Koetting allegedly drew more than 100000 from the cash drawer using notes and collateral while falsifying annual reports to hide the shortages.
A disguised deputy U S marshal arrested Thomas Murray in Winona North Dakota for selling liquor to Indians and violating internal revenue laws. The prisoner was held at the agency guardhouse until daylight as authorities say a broader crackdown on whisky sales to Indians may follow along the reservation frontiers.
Lowe and Kelly, accused of killing Policeman Evan Paulson during a July burglary at Kenny Bros. drug store in Mayville, North Dakota, are in custody after a sheriff´s escort from Fargo. The trial begins this term in Hillsboro district court amid fears of lynching.
In Stockholm Wisconsin two burglars entered Bellevue's drug store at night and fired on two sleeping men. The occupants fired back and the intruders fled without stealing anything. The robbers left a blood trail for several blocks before vanishing.
Robert E. Bader of Minneapolis has been discharged by writ of habeas corpus after being charged with conspiracy in the Martens mill deal at Brace River. The original fraud charge and the conspiracy accusation were dismissed as he was released in Wis Jan 17.
Henry M. Rice, a longtime St. Paul resident and early Minnesota figure, died suddenly in San Antonio Texas. Born 1816 in Waitsfield Vermont he helped build Fort Snelling and run trading posts from Lake Superior to the Red River. He settled in St. Paul in 1848 and served as delegate to Congress for the territory in 1849 and 1853, then as U S senator from 1858 to 1868. Remains to be brought to St. Paul for burial.
The New York State Bar association opened its annual convention in the capitol assembly chamber. Hon. J. Newton Fiero presided with an address on A Practical View of Law Reform in New York. Vice President Stevenson and Senator J N Dolph spoke on reform topics.
StiLLwater Minnesota January 17 The board of prison managers instruct Warden Wolfer to petition the district court to inspect Michael Sullivan Charles Baker and James Marsh for insanity Two of the inmates have served most of their terms and are so far gone the warden fears releasing them would be dangerous while they remain in prison officials can monitor other so called cranks.

Raleigh Ashley sues Theopold Pflaum for 47 dollars claiming payment for influencing Mary Reipsberger to marry Pflaum. He says he spent 7 dollars cash and provided 15 dollars worth of services and seeks judgment for 47 dollars.
In St Paul on January 17 the probate court granted a partial distribution to heirs Norman W. Kittson five thousand dollars, Mrs Lewis Baker Jr five thousand, Hercules Kittson two thousand, and Mrs Lewis Coyle Kittson fifteen thousand. The St Paul Trust Company as executor will appeal the order.

A blaze in Mills Ky destroyed the dwelling and adjacent buildings owned by Frederick A. Houson. The Houson family slept through the fire with the father and his son escaping. Mrs. Houson perished trying to awake her two daughters aged 17 and 19, who also died.
