The Brookings Press association band concert and supper drew hundreds of tickets sold across the county. Herman Liedschlag won the capital prize, a silver tilting pitcher, in the prize drawing. The event praised the band boys for hard work and success.
Last night about 9 o'clock a large bright meteor lit the southwest sky and frightened residents. It was followed by many swift falling stars, lighting up the city as if in a blaze, marking the old year’s exit in Highmore, Hicumory.
At Yankton Dec 29 the South Dakota Educational Association sessions attract many educators from across the state. Gen W H H Beadley Yankton Profs Kratz Mitchell Pickett Mellette Pres Gorrie Watertown McLouth Brookings Blackburn Pierre. Gov A Mellette spoke on Outsiders views of our educational needs. Blackburn Pierre discussed high schools to colleges relation. Olsen Vermillion spoke on The University. Tonight a banquet at the new opera house follows the session.
The session elected Gen. M. I. Kelly of Aberdeen as president, Prof. R. E. Enos of Scotland as secretary, and Dr. E. S. Wood of Miller as treasurer. Black of Pierre became president of the department of colleges and high schools, H. J. Whipple of Sioux Falls to supervise public schools. The next meeting will be in Yankton the week after Christmas.

A strong Y W T U society organized by Mrs Barker Hornung with Miss R Hackett as president held its first literary entertainment at the Michigan Settlement school house on Dec 28. Attendees enjoyed an opening address by Miss N Fuller recitations by Miss E Little and others with select readings and music. Hackett's essay on Higher Education of Women highlighted progress and responsibilities for better influence against social evils.
One of the best and most select parties of the season was hosted by the Governor's Guards at the Grand on Monday evening. A large attendance enjoyed good music lively dancing and a happy atmosphere marking the first entertainment under the new organization.
The New Year eclipse appeared after noon with no clouds. It became visible a little after three o'clock and continued until sunset, as about three fourths of the sun’s disc was obscured at the peak.
