A Bee special from Pine Ridge Agency details the Pine Ridge killings as preplanned. Two of four white men, Rodney Rouse and Emanuel Bennett, are identified with two youths James Bacon and William Kelley as co actors. Police report claim the murder was planned before it occurred and revolvers were to be fired at their targets.
Mr Fithian of Indiana delivers a minority report opposing the permanent census bureau bill. He argues the present office is overextended with duplicative divisions and irrelevant inquiries, creating a costly jumble of figures. The minority estimate suggests costs could reach far beyond $200,000 annually, with Baker of Kansas and Lawson of Georgia signing the report.
Washington February 8 The house committee on the Columbian exposition has not decided on opening the world’s fair on Sunday. A morning meeting to discuss the issue failed to achieve progress as a quorum did not appear due to an early house meeting.
Washington Feb 8 The cases of Barden and Walker against the Northern Pacific Railroad were ordered reargued before the full bench. The mineral land dispute involves title to extensive mineral lands along the railroad’s line.
Trenton February 8 Senate in executive session confirms all governor Werts nominations including William Walter Phelps to be judge of the court of errors and appeals. No opposition to Phelps and his son was confirmed by unanimous vote.
Counterfeiters seized as authorities report Harry McMahon aged 27 and his wife Kate implicated in the Munaver operation dated February 8.
Those who came to the city from Chicago about two weeks ago were arrested by local authorities on counterfeiting charges. McMahon had been operating in small business houses here.
The inauguration arrangements committee has awarded the music contract for the inaugural ball and promenade concerts to the United States Marine Band of Washington.

The national university bill introduced by General Hooker in the House is nearly identical to the Senate version by Mr. Proctor. It envisions a post graduate non sectarian non partisan institution with endowed fellowships, access to scientific collections at the capital, and uses half the net proceeds of public lands for support.
Springfield Illinois February 8 Senate approves Arnold resolution to have a senate committee investigate the school book trust and the United States School Furniture company.
A London cable dispatch reports Algernon Sartoris, husband of Nellie Grant, died on Friday in Capri Italy. He had not lived with his wife for several years.
A Fargo and Southwestern passenger train wreck near Sheldon caused two deaths on arrival and three more sailors died in a fire as brakemen and a conductor were trapped in the caboose. Conductor Crawford, 30, left a wife and three children. Brakeman Quinlan, recently married, died. Tom Smith survived with a dislocated shoulder. Crawford to be buried in Fargo, Quinlan taken to Watertown. No insurance reported.
Professor Clement J. Webster reports discoveries in the Mogollon mountains of Southwestern New Mexico including clothing, basketry, pottery, stone implements, and a remarkably preserved cliff dweller mummy of a seven year old. He plans exhibition at the world's fair.
Norwegen bark Alice with Captain Jacobson from Dunkirk to New York ran ashore at Long Beach New Jersey. Five crew members perished trying to land in their boat as surf capsized it. Eleven survivors, including the captain, were rescued by the life saving station with a breeches buoy. The vessel is likely a total loss.
The steamer Cottage City from Portland to New York is ashore on the outer bar at Chatham. With passengers aboard and a valuable cargo, the vessel pounds amid rough seas and continues to signal for help as rescue attempts are hindered by high surf up to 11:20 a.m. None of the boats could reach the ship.
A gas explosion at 233 West Twenty third Street in New York destroyed a five story building at 2 30 a m. injuring about twenty people. Gas inspector John Peters was in the cellar and killed. The building housed two families.
A Peoria fire totally destroys the Grape Sugar works warehouse and starch house with losses over 100000. Workers escape with difficulty as Charles Jaeger sustains severe burns to head and face. The Pabst Brewing company warehouse also burns.
John Stott, once known for organizing the Kearney Nebraska cotton spinners strike, was stabbed six times about the head by Janesville workers Joe Frantz and John Eckert. He had returned from Kearney where German workers were feared to be ousting English strikers.
Two white men were killed and another severely wounded in an ambush last Saturday night near Pollock's mill in Grant Parish. Authorities have not identified the attackers or motive.
Advocates for repealing the Sherman silver bullion purchase act report a conference outcome. A resolution declares a house majority favors repeal and the push to sign a cloture petition is abandoned to battle on the floor with friends of honest money from both parties.

Heavy rains and ice blocked sewer openings causing widespread basement flooding in downtown Chicago. Water penetrated business districts and residential blocks, suspending travel.
Washington February 8 Mr J D Taylor of Ohio introduced a house resolution directing the speaker on suspension days and fixed days to refuse to entertain any motion he would not entertain when a rules committee member is under consideration.
In Des Moines yards on February 8 an engineer on a Chicago Great Western train backed cars causing the death of switchman James Lockwood of Monticello who was crushed between cars, and badly injuring another switchman Matt Dunn. No blame is placed on the engineer.
The Pan ama stockholders executive committee says the minister of finance and the official receiver approved continuing work on the canal and applying for an extension of time to complete the concession from Colombia. They contend De Lesseps' concession remains sufficient.
Lincoln Feb 8 Judge W B Allen Populist wins U S Senate by 70 votes with all Democrats voting for him. Independents cheer as he is elected and the article notes questions about campaign funds. Johnson to investigate campaign funds fate.
Representative Johnson of North Dakota heads to New York to probe Republican National Committee contributions to the state campaign. He cites $17 000 reported by Senator Powers and a $1 000 to $2 000 sum for executive officers. He alleges at least $15 000 was misused to defeat straight Republican candidates.
Secretary of the Interior John W. Noble in St. Louis denounces Clarkson for comparing himself to President Harrison, calling the president a cautious man and Clarkson unwise to attack cabinet members. Noble expects Senate confirmation of Judge Jackson.

Denison Texas February 8. A sensation in financial circles as the Denison Land and Investment company is placed in receivership by W C McGinnis vice president of the First National Bank. Organized in the boom era with W B Rice of Kansas City as president the firm had 1 2 million in capital. It helped finance the cotton mill at 500000 and spent over 1 million on improvements. Boom reaction and internal dissensions led to collapse.
VanxTon Wisconsin report notes Milwaukee and St. Louis brewers win $250000 beer sales statewide while opponents push to enforce prohibitory law and bar brewers from the state. Republicans express strong opposition amid tense policy debate.
Canadian Pacific train stalled eight miles from Swift Current station in a blizzard. Conductor offered Patrick Ward $5 to walk back to the station. Ward attempted the trek, sank in the snow a half mile from safety and froze to death. He leaves an invalid wife and several children.
Johnny Griffin of Braintree Massachusetts defeats Australian Billy Murphy for the featherweight title in seven rounds at Coney Island Athletic Club. A stormy crowd also watched Kid Hogan versus Dally Lyons in a 20 round bout. Murphy broke a wrist early, Griffin stopped him in round seven.
Colonel Charles E Daily American commissioner for King Teburiemo of Butaritari in the Gilbert islands sent a protest to Washington against British seizure of the islands during negotiations with the United States He seeks U S annexation protection Captain Davis of the British navy is accused of arbitrary and insulting conduct rep resentatives say the seizure followed word from Sidney Australia that the king sought U S protection.
Lonnox February 8 Justice Harlan of the United States Supreme Court was introduced by Lord Chief Justice Coleridge to the barristers of the Court of Queen's Bench and invited to occupy a seat on the bench with the lord chief justice.
Brief items note the Monterey being formally accepted by the government. Also reported are the deaths of O F Perkins of Northfield Minnesota and Captain Benjamin F Howey of Belvidere New Jersey. Other notes cover proposed Kentucky anti crinoline bill and whisky trust testimony.
Boston February 8 A rumor claims John Quincy Adams was offered the state portfolio by the president elect. Adams could not be reached and is said to have refused comment, signaling no confirmation of the report.
D Geuttes of Shoal Lake was found dying in his room with a pistol shot through his head in Winnitza. The shooting remains surrounded by unclear circumstances and possible foul play is suspected as details are scarce.
