The Dakota Territory see rapid growth with 1885 census placing farms at 82,367 and population at 415,664. The bureau notes southern Dakota 262,515 people and northern 153,149, farming expands beyond Maine and even California by farm count. Wheat production tops 500,000,000 bushels, ranking eleventh nationwide.
