G H Starring signs a protest against a new Huron school board law raising tuition for foreign scholars from three to ten dollars per term. He argues education costs exceed tuition and calls for restoring lower rates funded by tax or endowment. The letter decries the measure as un-American and harmful to poorer students near district lines.
Miss Annie Marsh returns to school in Huron after visiting her sick mother. A Davis schoolhouse library event occurs each Wednesday. Mrs. Herman Kelley plans a visit home from Iowa this week. Houghton and Thompson report another artesian well with a strong 975 foot flow of soft water. The boys complete M L Houghton’s well Sunday morning. Department of the Interior contest notice for homestead entry 14538 in Beadle County South Dakota. Contestant C B Dickinson accuses Estella R Walker of failure to build habitation or cultivate the tract and of abandonment for over six months. Court hearing set for February 7 before the U S Land Office in Huron. Publication ordered in the Huronite. Reed.
The Town of Shrewsbury Massachusetts, as assignee of William J Bowditch, trustee, seeks foreclosure of a mortgage on 160 acres in Beadle County South Dakota. The mortgage, recorded in Beadle, secures $502.38 plus taxes and attorneys fees after default. Public auction set for January 5, 1900 at 2 PM at the Beadle County Courthouse, Huron.
