Mayaguez Taken by White Squadron

Mayaguez capture reported by a white squadron including the Iowa Illinois Albany and Chicago at 6 09 a m with the channel mined. Nashville and Eagle entered harbor while San Francisco and Atlanta were not seen. Three scouts and the Mist observed at Mona Passage as Admiral Sumner’s fleet advanced. Mayaguez allowed to escape.

Indians as Laborers on Elk Horn Railroad

Rapid City reports the Elk Horn railroad increasing Indian employees from Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations. About 30 to 40 Indians work as coal shovelers, section men, and graders, proving reliable and equal to white workers. Indians earlier worked under government wage rules of $1.25 daily, while the railroad pays $1.59 daily, with similar labor demands and greater independence.

Anarchists Arrested Near Spezia Over King Victor Emanuel Plot

Thirteen anarchists were captured near Spezia after a clash during an oath taking. Police wounded one officer and one arrestee in the struggle as the group plotted to assassinate King Victor Emmanuel.

Disaster in Mine Kills Four, Injures Ten at Lehigh and Wilkesbarre

Four men died and ten were injured in a dynamite explosion at No 5 mine South Wilkesbarre. The dead are Robert Humblebee Arthur Jones Matthew Phillips and James McGlynn. The shaft is 110 feet deep and gas did not ignite. Loss estimated at half a million dollars.

Atlanta Suffered Worst Fire In City History

A disastrous blaze began at 4 a.m. in the Snook and Austin furniture store on Whitehall Street and swept through the Norcross building and Jacobs drug house. The Williams hotel and Kimball House vicinity were affected as sparks spread, threatening guests though none known killed. The Peters Building burst its windows from heat as damage mounted. The Norcross and Peters structures housed offices and a full sixth floor restaurant.

Fire destroys Colgate store and post office in Menominee Falls

A fire at Colgate five miles north of Menominee Falls Wisconsin killed three people and injured six. Max Manthey perished with a broken neck after leaping from a window. Miss Hedwig Manthey, nine, was not recovered and Edna Manthey died of injuries. The origin of the blaze remains a mystery.

Duel Looms After House Fracas In Havana Corridor

New York dispatch reports Senor Perez secretary of the house of representatives was attacked in a conference room by Representative Mendieta a Nationalist and Mendieta a Republican. He was knocked down twice before colleagues separated them. The dispute arose from house debates and a duel is said to be likely.

A morning fire in Bird Island Minnesota caused a death and $60,000 in property loss. George Fewer, about fifteen, was helping move goods when a kerosene oil tank exploded, killing him.
