A Madison dispatch reports Judge R D Marshall of Chippewa Falls was appointed to fill the Wisconsin Supreme Court vacancy created by Judge Orton's death. Official notice has been sent and Marshall is expected to accept the position.
Ashland Wisconsin August 2 Mary Thrush was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her husband last spring in a case that drew local attention and ended with a judge’s ruling.
Col umbus Aug 5 Jacob S Coxey of Massillon was nominated for governor by the Populist convention in Columbus.
In Chicago on August 7 radical calls circulated for a mass meeting at 500 State Street to arm the colored residents in response to outrages in Spring Valley. Ida B Wells Barnett spoke at an earlier gathering as a telegram urged Gov Altgeld to protect colored miners and rumors of armed marches against Italians surfaced.
In Spring Valley Illinois on August 7 the riot situation eases as a few black women leave Location with goods while most who fled the city huddle in woods near Seatonville. The injured Rose remains alive but unlikely to survive as a dynamite bomb is found near manager Dalzell’s residence triggering alarms at the coal company.

Omaha reports a calm day as the fire and police board orders 75 special policemen home after 30 hours on duty. Some officers pledged to support the new board considered secession but postponed action as new developments unfolded.
Market Lake Idaho August 6 A special telegram from the Bannock agency reports Indian Agent Teter has wired General Coppinger that all Indians absent from the Fort Hall reservation have returned and that all is quiet He also told Washington that the absent Indians had been in council and sent heart felt good wishes to the white man stating they had not harmed anyone and would begin haymaking while leaving grievances to white justice.
