County seat fight ends in Columbia victory

Death in Prairie Fire Near Krumach County

Mrs Weinberg living fourteen miles south of this place died yesterday in a prairie fire that swept the area after days of burning. She saw the flames and tried to reach her house but was overtaken by the fire and perished. The blaze consumed crops, stock and other property on the prairie.

Mt Vernon Fire Destroys Business District

Mt Vernon suffered a devastating blaze this afternoon destroying the business section and most residences. The Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul depot and about fifteen to twenty freight cars and four elevators burned with an estimated loss near 300000 dollars and little insurance. About one hundred families were left homeless as relief efforts from Mitchell aided by a special train delivering provisions faced strong winds.
