A Voice From Afar Berlin White Week Describes Snow

Miss Elizabeth Reid writes from Berlin describing a week of snow and disruptions. The piece captures Berliners and visitors enjoying concerts and theatres despite weather while porters, buses, and streetcars struggle. Snow piles clog streets as 6 500 wagons clear debris and workers keep routes open. The account contrasts Das Volk in Schoeneberg with Berlin West residents and observes sleighs, market scenes at Winterfeldt Platz, children playing in snow, and the thaw beginning to ease daily life.

Florida and Cuba impressions of a winter trip

Mr Philip Lawrence and wife returned from a January southern trip described to a Huronite reporter. They toured Jacksonville and Bartow visiting J M Snedigar and wife, learned about phosphate mining and its use as fertilizer, and observed pine turpentine tapping, pecan tree rearing, and shell road building in Florida. Lawrence praised Cuba’s climate and soil but doubted rapid commercial progress without political stability and U S control.
