Assurances Shift in Washington on Mexican Mediation
ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON May 3 With plans for the Mexican mediation conference at Niagara Falls Ont next went rapidly maturing tension of the international contract was relieved somewhat today by important developments. Assurances reached this government that no ammunition has been landed at Mexican ports from German ships a matter that had been in doubt since the Kronprinzess voyage from Puerto Mexico. From the French legation in Mexico City came positive information that American Vice Consul John R Sillman who had been held prisoner by Mexican federals at Saltillo was on his way to Mexico City under guard to be turned over to the Brazilian minister there who would guarantee his safety until he reaches Vera Cruz. The state department insisted Huerta release Sillman. Secretary Bryan said the government would welcome a return of Mexican lighthouse leaders to the fight on the Lobos island which American naval forces had seized for navigation. The government did not consider manning the lighthouse a act of war but would keep the Light operating until Huerta sends a Mexican force back. Another development arousing interest was the report that Nelson OShaughnessy informed President Wilson that Huerta, realizing collapse was near, was preparing to make a last stand at Puebla now being fortified. The state department announced H Percival Dodge former minister to Panama had been selected as secretary to the American delegates at the mediation conference. Heavy firing at Tampico resumed at midnight and the Constitutionalists expect to capture Tampico today per navy despatch from Admiral Mayo. The general impression is that the Romancia will be compelled to retreat. William Banks 17 walked near Greenwich Conn to attend dinner.
