Congress Helps Protect Migratory Birds Move Passed
Washington March 6 The House followed the Senate and passed the Weeks McLean bill for federal protection of migratory birds. The American Game Protective and Propagation Association endorsed the measure and mobilized supporters from coast to coast. The bill empowers the Agriculture Department to regulate hunting of migratory birds, aiming to save species from extinction and reduce agricultural losses by preserving insect-eating birds. The effort drew broad backing from sportsmen naturalists and many state and local game associations. Thousands of letters and hundreds of hearings in Washington helped secure approval. Leaders from Camp Fire Club of America Boone and Crockett Club New York Association for the Protection of Birds and other groups backed the measure with state commissioners and prominent advocates urging passage.
