Preservation of 173 Battle Flags at the Naval Academy
The article recalls Congress 1814 action to collect foreign trophies, the 1849 transfer to Annapolis, later moth damage, and Rear Admiral Howard in 1900 starting preservation. Commander Wee Cole led care, funds rose from 3,000 to 30,000, and experts mended flags with European backing, using ancient Egyptian stitches to preserve rather than restore, then storing the largest on the ceiling and others in sealed cases with Prof. Washburn researching their history.
