A great cyclone in the Philippines reportedly killed about a thousand and left thousands homeless. Communications from Madrid say the storm swept the southern archipelago causing massive suffering and uncertain casualty totals that may rise in days. Government relief measures are being organized with temporary hospitals and shelter for the homeless.
Fire at the Derby Desk Company six story building on Liberty Street in Pittsburg caused hundreds of thousands in damage and likely several deaths. The Derby Desk building and three adjoining structures housing Greer, Rusch and Baker Office Furniture were destroyed. The Seventh Avenue Hotel suffered fire and water damage but the Bueste ape remained safe. Nora Williams, stenographer for Derby Desk, was crushed in the incident.
J M Crouch traveling representative of Koblegard Company attended the funeral of his mother Mrs Harrett M Crouch in Curwensville Pennsylvania on Monday after Moon Airs Crouch died at her Tyron home Saturday following a brief illness with heart disease. The family formerly lived in Curwensville and was buried there. Surviving are J M Crouch and two sisters one who died three years ago. Mr Crouch's many friends in this city extend sympathy.
The article reports Emmanuel Plattner died in Kessler hospital after being brought from the city lock-up. His body was transported by two brothers to Martinsburg for funeral services. A post mortem examination was planned but blocked by embalming, while a separate note mentions infant St. Ean Johnson of Marshville dying of indigestion.

Roanoke Virginia February 25 a man believed by police to be Giuseppe Calante wanted at New Castle Pennsylvania for the murder of an aged wealthy farmer named Duff was arrested and placed in custody He gave his name as Dominic Conzell and matches the description of the New Castle suspect with a thousand dollar reward posted there
Rathbone Sistens will hold a regular meeting tomorrow night to initiate three candidates into membership and consider four or five applications. Attendees are to conduct regular business while John B Hart travels east on a business trip.
Jefferson City Mo Feb 25 Representative Clark introduces a bill targeting public profanity. It imposes a fine between 50 cents and one dollar for cursing in public by anyone aged fourteen or older. A petition urging open saloons after 1 pm Sundays was presented by Senator Kinney.
The special term of the U S circuit court with Judge Nathan Goff resumed Monday morning. Evidence for the defense in A Thomson of Philadelphia v Philippi Colliers Company was continued with Ypates Brady testifying. The defense opposes mortgage foreclosure and receiver appointment for 318000 purchase money, arguing the property is improving rather than deteriorating. The case may extend two to three days, possibly all week.
A convention of the board of home missions and church extension of the Methodist Episcopal church opened at the Smithfield Street Mission in Pittsburgh. Prominent ministers from across the United States attend along with large contingents from the Erie East Ohio West Virginia and Pittsburgh conferences. Dr. Robert Forbes of Philadelphia is the principal speaker.
United States Sub Treasury at Chicago was robbed of 173000 dollars. The loss was discovered Tuesday after the theft occurred last Monday. Believed to involve Treasury employees, the large sum was in large bills and the case is being investigated by authorities.
Samuel J. Butters of the Empire Company sustained serious injuries from a Sunday morning fall on the icy pavement in front of a shoe shop on North Fourth Street Glen Elk. He broke his right arm in two places above the elbow and the bone splintered, causing three fractures. He is in great pain and will be unable to work for some time.
City residents seeking saloon operation in Clarksburg for the next term must file license applications with the city clerk by March 4 a week from Tuesday. The city council will convene as a license court on Monday evening, April 1 to act on all applications.
Deputies Guy Tetrick and Roy Byrd will continue in office after the death of county clerk Charles F. Holden until the county court's next regular session, convening March 11. The court will not appoint Holden's successor before that time and will not hold a special session. Names mentioned for the appointment include Harry Higginbotham Samuel Parts Wayman Ogden and Wade Coffman. J. W. Williams of Marshville visited the city on business.
Elma Dare, accused of kidnapping George Rhodius and marrying him in Louisville, was arrested at Todd sanitarium Cambridge Springs by Deputy Sheriff Paul Marshall. Rhodins aided by J H Harper and John W Claypool traced to the scene. authorities plan extradition to Indianapolis.
In Charleston a state appropriation bill moved from Senate to House after morning passage. An amendment adding 10,000 for San Jose fruit-procurement was adopted unanimously, while a proposal to pay committee members for investigating state institutions failed. The sheriffs bounty bill died on first reading, and the Dill law bill stalled in committee with a likely quick end. A short extra session seems probable.
One of the era’s pivotal bills approves an improved voting method. Ballots will list all candidates by party in columns with residences, ban printing cross-nomination names, and display party emblems at the top. Voters mark their choice in ink or indelible pencil opposite the candidate name.
J. W. Kemper of Wallace is discharged from Keesler Hospital where he had been a patient. The retirement era medical care update notes his recent departure from the facility.
Mr. W. H. Hicks of the Traders pool and billiard room will marry Theodosia McKinley formerly of Philadelphia but now of Pittsburg. Hicks left Sunday for Pittsburg. They will spend a two week honeymoon in eastern cities and then reside in Clarkburg.
The funeral for Roy Patton, son of Mrs. George Patton, was held Sunday afternoon at 4 o clock at the home. Rev S K Arbuthnott conducted the service. Interment followed at Elk View cemetery. Roy died from spinal meningitis caused by a rack of corn thrown from his shoulder. His death comes after the burial of his father George Patton about a month earlier.
Willison and Dennison negotiate transactions as WR Gow buys a seven room frame dwelling at Mak and Pike owned by RL G Davieton of Weston. The Thompson property at Booth second and Mechanic streets transfers to Cuthbert Oshorme.
A Muskogee fire damaged the Pair lumber works causing significant losses estimated near $100,000. J. T. Fab and others cited as involved, with the main blaze affecting the stack area and threatening nearby facilities. Authorities investigate the incident.
Fradelé Boyer 21 traveled to Parkersburg, bought wood alcohol and drank it. He then forced others in his family to share the poison, including Frank Boyer 56, Jennie 10, and Harry 7. The mother and eight month old baby also died, with a large funeral held in Palestine. Francis who bought the alcohol was also reported likely to die.
A damaged report from Copenhagen states a three masted vessel ran ashore near Piaitring on the Jutland coast. The ship, Himam of 1300 tons, carried a crew of about eighteen. All hands are presumed drowned.
